What Makes the Perfect Candidate?

Installing tile over an existing floor—whether it’s old tile, concrete, or sturdy wood—is an excellent shortcut, but only if the original floor is in tip-top shape. Because tile is completely rigid, any movement underneath will cause your new grout lines to crack and your tiles to loosen.

You can safely tile over your existing floor if it meets these criteria:

• It is Perfectly Flat and Level: There should be no dips, bumps, or slopes in the existing floor.
• The Original Floor is Structural Sound: If you are tiling over old tile, those tiles must be firmly bonded to the subfloor with absolutely no hollow sounds, loose edges, or deep cracks.
• Zero Flexing or Bouncing: If your floor creaks, bends, or flexes when you walk across it, it cannot support a new layer of tile without a proper underlayment first.
• The Surface is Clean and Bondable: The existing floor must be completely stripped of old wax, sealers, grease, and dirt so the new mortar can grip onto it perfectly.

Preparation is Key!

To get a lasting bond, the existing floor usually needs to be scuffed up or sanded to create a rough texture, followed by a specialized primer. This gives the new mortar the ultimate grip!
