What is the Best Cleaning Method for Tile and Grout

Tile and Grout is in every home no mater what era it was built in. This means that every homeowner will have to take the time to make sure they are keeping it cleaned and well maintained. How do you know to clean and care for your tile with so many ways of doing so? It can be difficult to figure out what is going to work the best for you. The Grout Medic of Colorado Springs understands the predicament that every homeowner is in and thus we want to help you make the best decision possible. We will go through a couple of ways that you can clean your tile and the difficulty that you will face with each one of them.

Steam Cleaning

Steam cleaning is among the best options when you want to go environmentally friendly. It also cleans and sanitizes your tile and grout at the same time. This doesn’t mean every steam cleaner can or should be used on tile and grout. Carpet steam cleaners are for carpets not tile, and while they may show results on tile and grout it can cause damage because it’s too rough on the material. Homeowners need to be sure that they get a company that has a steam cleaner specifically for tile and grout. This is the cleaning method that we use to restore your tile and grout to its original beauty.

Acidic Cleaners

When it comes to these types of cleaners, you’re typically working with one of two types of acids, either sulfamic acid or phosphoric acid. Either of these two types of acid compounds are noted as being relatively safe for pets and kids. So, you can get your first worry out of the way, just be sure that you keep them out of the room until you’re completely done cleaning. The only downside to them is that they work by means of slowly eating away at the grout by means of etching. In short, you’ll just have to keep in mind that sometime down the road you’ll have to have your grout replaced.

Alkaline Cleaners

When we talk about alkaline cleaners, we are referring to cleaners that have bleach in them. These types of cleaners work best with white grout. There are a large portion of homes that have showers with the standard 4” white tiles and white grout. Such showers are the best to use these types of cleaners. You can even make your own cleaner with 1-part bleach to 10 parts water. When you use any products with bleach in it there are some safety precautions that all should be careful to follow. Make sure that the space you’re working in is well vented and that you’re working with a respirator.

Hydrogen Peroxide

This is among one of the best tile and grout cleaners when it comes to homemade solutions. Typically, every household has this laying around. To make the easy homemade solution just take 1-part hydrogen peroxide and then add equal parts water and oxygen bleach. Unlike normal bleach this type doesn’t leave a residue. When you follow through on the cleaning aspect of things simply apply it and then let it sit for about 10 minutes. After you’ve let it sit then take a nylon brush and agitate the grout. If the stains seem to not come out, then repeat the process as many times as needed.
