What is the Purpose of Grout

Sometimes it seems as if grout simply exists to become dirty, crumble, and ultimately fall out. So, is grout even necessary? What is the purpose of grout? Well, since grout and tile are our life here at the Grout Medic of Colorado Springs, allow us to shed a little light on the subject.

First of all, you may be wondering if the purpose of grout is to hold your tile in place. And the answer is, no.

The only exception to this is epoxy grout. The way epoxy grout bonds, it will stabilize your tile to an extent. Only the grout joints where the tile and the epoxy meet will be stabilized, however. So, while upgrading to epoxy grout has many advantages, it still will not replace proper tile installation methods. Those proper methods are going to be what truly holds your tile into place.

If grout does not hold tiles into place, though, can it be skipped altogether? The answer is also no.

Grout still has a very important purpose. The purpose of grout is mainly to keep things out. You see, the backerboard behind your shower pan and tiles is not waterproof. Your tiles are waterproof of course, but since water is a fluid, nonsolid substance, it can easily find its way to your shower walls if there is not any grout present. The problem with allowing that to happen is, you guessed it, mold. Mold can be extremely damaging to your property and sometimes to your health as well. If you try to scrape out any debris that gets clogged in the open spaces between your tiles, you also risk causing damage to them during the process.

So, while grout is not integral to the stabilization of your tile it is still an extremely important element. That of course does not mean that you cannot have fun with it! Grout comes in three types: sanded, non-sanded, and epoxy. As well as a wide array of colors. So, do not forget to use grout to infuse some of your personality into your next tile project.

If you are in need of a skilled professional to carry out your tile project, look no further! The Grout Medic of Colorado Springs does not sacrifice proper procedures in order to save money or time. But that does not mean we are not affordable. Give us a call today to receive a free estimate.
