How to Paint Tile Floors

If your tile floors are feeling a little blasé, believe it or not, you do not have to spend a pretty penny to give your floor a facelift. It is true, and The Grout Medic of Colorado Springs is going to explain how.

Painting your tile is an easy way to give your flooring a high-end makeover without the steep price tag. You can create whatever color scheme you want from monochrome to bright and playful with just some paint and time.

Best Tiles for Painting

Of course, you can paint any ceramic tiles but one issue you may run into is when it comes to moisture. If the paint is exposed to too much moisture for too long, the paint will begin to peel. So, if you want your painted tile job to be around for the long haul, you may want to avoid painting bathroom tiles.

How to Prepare the Tile

As with almost any home project, the key to a beautiful finished product is starting with a clean and smooth base. To prepare your tile for painting, be sure to clean it thoroughly and vacuum away any old tile or grout chips and debris. Next, fill in any missing grout, ideally with epoxy grout. And finally, make sure to cover any nearby baseboards with painters’ tape as well as the grout itself.

Choosing the Right Paint

For the best results, you want to use the right type of paint. Generally, the best paints to use on ceramic tile will be chalkboard, latex, and oil-based paints. A fun shabby chic look can be achieved without the fuss of a primer with the use of chalk paint. However, if you decide to use latex or oil-based paints, it is important not to skip the priming step.

If you are doing one solid color for your floors, brush rolling will be the easiest and fastest application. Although, you can always play around with bold and classic patterns. You can do simple alternating colors on each tile or you can get creative using stencils. If you choose to go with a patterned floor, start by cutting in the edges of each tile. Next, roll the color onto the remaining surface area. After the paint is dried, lock it all in with a sealant.
